What learning Japanese actually does for a child
Three alphabets, one at a time
Japanese uses three writing systems side by side, which sounds daunting and turns out to suit children rather well. Hiragana and katakana are learned the way the alphabet is learned, a little at a time, and kanji arrive gradually with plenty of repetition.
Children who start young tend to get the sounds right in a way that older learners have to work at, because Japanese has a small, regular set of them.
Room to grow into
A language started at seven is not a school subject that ends at eighteen. Bangkok has one of the largest Japanese communities outside Japan, a long list of Japanese companies, and exchange and scholarship routes for students who can already hold a conversation. None of that has to be the reason a child starts. It is simply what is waiting if they keep going.
What lessons are like
Our Japanese teachers are native speakers, qualified, and experienced at teaching children, which is a different skill from teaching adults. Lessons move quickly between talking, games, reading and writing, because a child’s attention is a real constraint and we plan around it rather than against it. A lesson is 50 minutes, and most children come once or twice a week.
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.
If your child is already keen
Plenty of children arrive already knowing a surprising number of words, picked up from shows and games, and no idea how to put them together. That is a good place to start from, not a problem to undo.
Others arrive with nothing at all. Both are normal, and the assessment tells us which we are working with.
Japanese around Bangkok
One of the better things about learning Japanese in this city is how much of it a child can use straight away. There are Japanese restaurants, bookshops, supermarkets and festivals within reach of every one of our branches.
Reading a menu without help, or greeting someone properly, is the kind of small win that keeps a child interested through the harder weeks.
